Infuse the vivid orange Sockeye salmon with the scent of smouldering cedar. It’s easy, fast and delicious to make this grilled cedar planked salmon.

Y’all know me. I’m a meat person. I mean c’mon, I’m legitimately a Hardcore Carnivore. I don’t find myself eating that much fish-meat, but have started bringing it back into my diet. Why? Well, if something is really tasty as well as pretty darn good for you, I figure eating it at least once a week is a good idea.

I found it extra convenient that each portion is vacuum sealed, so I only have to defrost as much as I need each time.

And now for the planking! And I don’t mean the ab-crunching elbow resting exercise… See, you can buy all manner of thin wood planks for cooking food. The most common species used is cedar, and it’s nearly always paired with salmon, because they go together just like biscuits and gravy. The cedar infuses the fish with the most incredible scented aroma, and the whole thing cooks in 8-10 minutes. Scroll down to find out how to do it.

Easy Grilled Cedar Planked Salmon with lemon

For this recipe, it’s recommended you use two-zone grilling so the wood isn’t directly above a heat source. 

Ingredients

  • 2-3 portions of wild Alaskan Sockeye salmon
  • 1 large cedar plank
  • 1 large lemon, sliced
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 2-3 tsp honey
  • Salt & pepper

Instructions

  1. Immerse the cedar plank in water, and allow to soak at least an hour. If necessary, use a dish to weigh it down.

  2. Heat a grill for two zone cooking with medium heat.

  3. Lay the salmon along the plank, skin side down. Coat the top of each piece well with sesame oil, then sprinkle with salt, pepper and paprika. Drizzle honey across the top of the fish, then top each piece with 1-2 slices of lemon.

  4. Place the plank over indirect heat, close the lid to the grill and allow to cook, 8-12 minutes, depending on the side of your fish. Start checking it at the 8 minute mark, when ready it should easily flake away.
